Botulinum Toxin injections can even be used for hyperhidrosis (excess sweating). This can be localised or affect the whole body and is an awful condition for those affected. The culprits are the water producing (eccrine) sweat glands in the body and not the apocrine sweat glands which produce the oily sweat which causes odour. Localised symmetrical hyperhidrosis (primary) is the most common form and may affect the palms, soles under arms, face and scalp – or combinations of these. The cause is unknown but generally starts in teenage years and tends to improve with age.
Botulinum toxin is used to great effect by blocking the nerve impulses to the eccrine sweat glands with effects lasting up to 6 months. This produces wonderful results for underarm sweating with a dramatic improvement in quality of life for most patients. The treatment usually takes between 45 minutes and results are typically noticeable within 10 days with a reduction of sweating.
This is a relatively simple life-changing procedure for some people who find excessive sweating highly embarrassing.
