BOTOX® is the first and only FDA-approved preventive treatment for Chronic Migraine. Botulinum toxin A (commonly known as “botox”) has been used within the medical arena for many years to treat muscle related conditions.
BOTOX® is a prescription medicine that is injected to prevent headaches in adults with chronic migraine who have 15 or more days each month with headache lasting 4 or more hours each day in people 18 years or older. For some time it has been used to alleviate migraines and headaches with regular sufferers.
What makes BOTOX® a different type of treatment? Unlike acute treatments, which are taken to treat a headache or migraine once it’s already begun, BOTOX® prevents headaches and migraines before they even start. BOTOX®prevents on average 8 to 9 headache days a month and for many sufferers of chronic Migraine that can make a huge difference to their life!
Not all doctors are qualified to administer the drug for the purposes of alleviating migraine, so it is important to find a doctor who is experienced to carry out this treatment. Our specialist Nurse, is able to help relieve our patients from this life debilitating treatment.
It is advised to try treatment at least twice, 12 weeks apart to assess success. Botox definitely has a positive role in bringing respite and giving temporary (up to 6 months) relief but must be repeated on a regular basis to ensure regular symptoms do not return.
